Rural Transport
The Mayo Rural Transport Initiative was established in 2003, is now called the Rural Transport Programme (RTP) and is managed on a countywide basis by Mayo North East, supported by a county wide steering committee. The Rural Transport Programme mission statement is ‘to provide a quality nationwide community based public transport system in rural Ireland which responds to local needs’. The aim of the Mayo RTP is to identify, plan and provide appropriate rural transport for all rural dwellers in all parts of Mayo. The focus in Mayo to date has been to target the most vulnerable groups in rural society and to ensure that they are provided with effective access to services, social activities and employment.

The RTP is funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport under the National Development Plan 2007-2013 (and nationally administered by Pobal) and also by the Department of Social Protections for the carriage of free travel pass holders.
Mayo RTP currently provides 47 services on a county-wide basis. Through the Mayo RTP, it has endeavoured to provide transport to those people most at risk of isolation. This can be seen in the priority given to providing transport services to people living on the islands and in isolated rural parts of the county. All services are “Door to Door” and Free Travel Pass holders travel free. All age groups are very welcome to travel. See our bus timetable for more information on the routes we service.

Rural Transport Services in Mayo to date are predominately provided by private operators, with the exception of seven community groups owning their own vehicles. It is through the help, support, and professionalism of our local operators that we achieve the standard of services we have today.
To ensure best practice with regard to health and safety, all contracted operators have received full training and certification in the following:
First Aid
M.I.D.A.S (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme).
Manual Handling
Mini Bus Evacuation and Emergency Procedures
